Golden Age of Beer Tour

Exploring some of the great beer gardens and brew houses of historic Philadelphia.
July 22, 2006

Rich Pawlak of the Golden Age of Beer Tours has been touring the best beer city in America, Philadelphia for the past 10 years. We'll visit the brewers and tavern owners and sample the beers at the forefront of Philly’s world famous beer culture! The tour begins at 11:o0 a.m. where we will depart from Carlow Cookery in chauffeured vans for stops at Monk's Cafe, Ludwig's Garten, McGillan's Old Ale House, The Yard's Brewery and The Standard Tap. There will be light food at each stop and we will enjoy a full lunch at Ludwig's Garten. You'll get to drink great beers, learn about what makes these beers so special and tours some of the City's most highly recognized restaurants.

We hope you had a great time!

Philadelphia is a great beer city as all those who attended our Golden Age of Beer Tour can attest.  We visited some of our great local treasures - Monk's Cafe, McGillans Pub and Yard's Brewery to enjoy the atmosphere and more importantly - taste the beer!  Check back for information on more beer tours.

Monk's Cafe

The first stop on our tour, Monk's is a highly regarded bistro.  The owner, Tom Peters introduced Belgian beer to the city of Philadelphia.  There are over 200 beers on tap and the food is excellent at this warm and friendly place.  This is the most famous beer destination in the city and a fitting way to start the tour.

What beer tour would be complete without a stop at a German restaurant and bar.  Ludwig's Garten is an authentic Bavarian-Austrian bier garten and one of the city's most popular lunch and happy hour destinations.  It has a huge selection of distinctive German beers on tap, a great selection of bottle beers, delicious German fare and great atomosphere.

It's here we enjoy a hearty lunch including salads, wursts, sauerkraut, wienerschnitzel, potato pancakes and sauerbraten.  It's all capped off with an amazing apple strudel!

Yard's Brewery

Being the oldest and only surviving brewery within city limits, Yards has continued its investment in the renewal of our city with the purchase of our new brewery in 2001. Our brewery is located at the corner of Hagert and Martha Streets in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia. The facility was originally built to house the brewing operations of the Weisbrod and Hess Oriental Brewing Company. Due to the unforeseeable dark days of prohibition in the USA, Weisbrod and Hess stopped brewing in 1939. Yards has resurrected this building along with the once proud brewing tradition in Philadelphia.
